Playing a stringed instrument is very complex. If your child started the violin or viola in his or her school orchestra program, s/he probably has had excellent instruction. But each child has his or her individual habits or problems that can be formed. A teacher in a room with 30 students cannot go individually to each student and correct every wrong bow grip or fingering. A private teacher can be invaluable in making sure students get the individual attention needed. Secondly, school orchestras generally focus on orchestra music—music written for all four stringed instruments together. Typically, the first violins have the melody, but everyone else has some sort of harmony. Private study can allow a student of any instrument to have an opportunity to learn solo music that was written specifically for that instrument. It also allows students to learn techniques that are specific to their instrument.
